RE: Winterize Outside Shower Only - Possible?

More and more I read that you do not have to use hot water to do your clothes.I should try two identical loads and compare them.

RE: Securing cabinets, drawers and windows

Our doors and drawers were opening when we traveled. I noticed a loose screw in the latch for a cabinet drawer. My husband tightened it and than checked the others. The drawers did not slide out or doors open when traveling for about a year and a half. Luckily I remembered what he had done and tightening the loose screws worked again. Really sounds dumb doesn't it?
I had bought the child proof locks but we have never had to put them on.
We have never traveled thru the western mountains, just the eastern ones which might make a difference.

RE: Travel Trailer inside storage ideas?

We like to read so needed a bookcase to take along, the best place for the bookcase was right next to the door on the bunkroom wall so we have not fastened it in place but lay the empty case on a bunk when we travel. I am afraid that if something has to be moved out the front door there would not be room if the bookcase was fastened there. It would hold all sorts of things besides books.
We have a folding table under the awning with a plastic fitted floor length tablecloth on. Rubbermaid boxes fit under it, unseen.
We have made extra shelves in the linen closet. Much more conveinent.

RE: Lard or Crisco

Crisco for baking and Canola oil for frying. My mother and grandmothers both used lard and lived until 90, husband's as well.

RE: Brochures, Maps, Fliers--what do you save?

I sit in front of the TV after we get home and go thru the box we have from each vacation. I sort out things I have copied from the library, maps and a few other things and put them in a large sized notebook. Most of the stuff gets tossed. When we return to the area I pull the notebook out and start adding.
Large notebooks come from garage sales as I am not going to spend $8+ for new ones.
We go thru each campground and list the sites we like the best. One copy stays in a small book in the trailer the other goes into my husband's office as he makes the reservations.

RE: Family Oriented Campground - NOT!

We were staying in a National Park and had paid until today, got an emergency call on Monday morning that our son was in a critical care unit. We got a refund for the two days we were not going to be there. Suprise, we did not expect it.

RE: For those of us who were unable to camp this weekend...

We were there seven years ago. As we crawled our way to the bottom of the Black Canyon, my husband slipped and slid the last twenty feet. He landed in a patch of poison ivy. I decided that I did not have to reach the bottom.
We have never camped over Labor Day weekend, we leave tomorrow for a month of camping.
Hope we can go back again.

RE: DANGEROUS CHOCOLATE CAKE-IN-A-MUG

Thank you, I can change the cake flour to corn starch and make it for myself. Many of the recipes here are things that would not adapt for me...no flour.

We stayed in a hotel in London that had heated toilet seats and towels racks. The warm towels were great after showers.

RE: New TT (woohoo) but lack of storage!

We never camp for just a weekend so we needed more room for dirty clothes, we got a folding hamper that sits in the bathtub. I do not like the way it looks but I would rather have it then have to find places to stuff a weeks supply of dirty clothes. The hamper comes out when someone wants to use the bathtub.
I like to have a table outside to cook on so we take a folding table. I made a floor length tablecloth that hides the two Rubbermaid boxes that fit under the table. The linen closet has several extra shelves. I did not need to take twenty towels but did need shelves for makeup.
We have three closets, one now has shelves. There are all sorts of places that will be great to store things. You just have to find them.

RE: trains

We have taken Amtrak cross country many times, often taking our small tent and necessary camping supplies with us. Sometimes we have arrived an hour late and once we had to sit for an hour at a small station because we arrived early.
We are not afraid to fly, we just like Amtrak. And we have never had to take a bus to get from one place to another.
I like to read so I take several books with me, my husband takes crossword puzzle books and we both take a blanket to cover up, makes sleeping easier.
We have sometimes had the small rooms and sometimes we use the regular cars.
Take disposable wash clothes and comfortable shoes.
Check the Amtrak website for information.
Smokers have a difficult time, having to rush out for the three minutes stops.

I always ask what percentage of the money donated goes to the charity, once it was ten percent. The other 90% went to fund raising.

RE: Newbie needs kitchen tips

We seldom go for short periods, I take real silverwear but the dishes I take are all meant as microwave dishes. I take an electric frying pan which I can use outside or inside if it is really cold. Bowls for pop corn. Mine are from garage sales and I can bake cakes in the microwave in them but they get more use as pop corn bowls.
Take a pad of paper to list the things you should have brought and a box to take the things in the house that you should not have brought.
When you make a meal in the house think of the things that you really have to have.
I take a one cup measuring cup with measurments for all of the smaller amounts on it.If you do much baking and cooking from scratch take a set of measuring spoons.
Garage sales are good places to pick up all of the things that you will need. Try to get everything over a period of time so you do not have to keep taking things in and out.

RE: Huckleberries are ripe

My children's favorite memories of camping revolve around picking and eating wild berries and fruit. Now we mark on our maps the good places and the good seasons to pick wild berries. When we go September 2nd thru October 2nd I will be making all sorts of apple desserts.

RE: Changing a Family Traditon

We often camp at Thanksgiving. Here in Michigan we sometimes have snow and sometimes have nice weather. I always have to take a rake to rake up the leaves at the camp site and a shovel in case we have a lot of snow.
We would like to do Christmas again.
